First, it is good to know that Rainbow Mountain full Day is the second most visited attraction in the Cusco region, For this reason there are approximately 1000 visitors per day in high season between the months of May to August.

Overview

One day excursion to the rainbow mountain, a challenging walk due to the lack of oxygen at altitude. Nothing difficult as long as you follow the advice of your private guide, who will accompany you all the time. We also really recommend you to spend at least 3 days in Cusco to acclimatize a bit. You will hike for more than 4600m (15092ft) and total length about 7 kilometers (4.4 miles) in about 4 hours round trip. The Highest point is 5040m (16540ft). This hike is difficult due to the altitude.

Itinerary

Our driver and guide will pass by your hotel in Cusco around 03:30 a.m / 04:00 a.m. Then they will go to the town of Cusipata through the southern valley, where they will have breakfast for approximately 30 minutes, then continue for 1 hour and 20 minutes to reach the starting point of the hike (4,600 m / 15,540 feet) with a total of 3 hours by car one way.
We start the walk. In 5 minutes we find the starting point of the horses where you will have the option to use them. At the same time, we will be able to observe the first snow-capped mountain that, due to its melting, forms a lagoon called puka cocha in Quechua (red lake).
We will have a dirt road and a bit of sand until we reach the highest point on the route, we will be able to observe local flora and fauna such as alpacas , llamas and if we are lucky chinchillas. After a total hike of about 2.5 hours, we finally arrive at our destination, what we came to see, the Rainbow Mountains (5040 m / 16,466 ft). After observing the striking beauty, you will have time to explore the area. You will have time to take pictures.
We will spend approximately 30 minutes at the top. Finally, it's time to head back down. We walked downhill the way we came. The walk will take 1 and a half hours. Our private van will be waiting for us when we return.
We will make a stop for lunch before heading to Cusco. We will embark on the approximately 3 hour drive back to Cusco and drop you off at your Cusco hotel. The approximate time of arrival is between 4:00 pm.

Weather

In the Andes we have two seasons, rainy and dry but we will always be prepared for any change, our main attraction Machu Picchu is located in a cloud forest, and here we have the possibility of rain in any season. Bringing rain gear or a rain poncho is recommended.

First Aid Kit

All our tour guides have knowledge of first aid and procedures in case of emergencies on the trails, at the same time they have an oxygen tank in order to help you to feel much better on trekking. However, It’s fine if you thinking to bring your own first aid kit for the tours.

Travel Insurance
